How to verify an online seller before paying

Match the seller across channels

Compare the seller name, website, phone number, email and payment recipient. A payment account belonging to an unrelated person is a reason to pause and ask for clarification.

Check product evidence

Reverse-search product photos when possible and ask for current, specific photos for high-value items. Reused images may indicate dropshipping, counterfeits or a listing copied from another seller.

Evaluate reviews carefully

Look beyond the star average. Check dates, detail, language patterns and how the business handles complaints. Reviews hosted only by the seller are weaker evidence than independent sources.

Compare the price with the market

An unusually low price can be a lure. Compare the same model, condition, shipping cost, warranty and return rights—not only the headline price.

Keep the transaction documented

Use written messages, keep the original listing and save invoices and payment confirmations. Do not move outside a protected marketplace checkout just to receive a discount.

Worked example: the payment recipient changes

Illustrative example: a seller confirms an order in one account, then another account asks you to pay a different recipient. Ask the original seller to confirm the change using a contact route you already trusted before that message arrived. Do not use a new phone number supplied only in the payment request as independent confirmation. Compare the seller name, invoice and recipient details; document any explanation. A valid phone number or old social profile does not resolve an unexplained mismatch.

Separate identity evidence from popularity

Follower counts, screenshots of happy customers and a profile picture can be copied. Record which facts you independently checked and which came only from the seller. Search the exact domain or recipient number rather than a common shop name alone. Read the details and dates of matching reports, including their source labels. If no report matches, continue checking the seller and payment conditions; absence from the database is not verification.
